Introduction

Industrial Product Design is one of the most complex activity managed by humans. It starts with the idea generation and finishes with the product's removal. New Products usually born from an insatisfaction, a problem or a difficulty. This dissatisfaction may be real or totally artificial. And human factors are a key to success in product launching. No one may predict surely, the success or failure in a product's acceptation by the market. However, there are several methodologies allowing to mitigate risks. All these elements make the product development process a perpetual challenge.

Definitions

Knowledge base
  1. Computer Science. The part of an expert system that contains the facts and rules needed to solve problems.
  2. A collection of facts and rules for problem solving.
The big difference between databases and knowledge bases is the freedom to access the information while removing the fields and tables barriers. XML allows both structures and visibility to be performed.

Project Management Methodologies

A note concerning Project Management Methodologies applied to product design is available here!

Available Knowledgebases

The following Knowledge Bases show different knowledge organization techniques. All the data compiled in these documents concern industrial product design. The different chapters are organized as written below: These lists are non exhaustive bases, segmented and redundant. The user may find the same information different places. These redundancies allow a quicker and safer access to the relevant information. Due to copyrights, no standards are available on this page. Some abstracts have been used to demonstrate usability techniques.

Chapter 01

List of civil standards including the ISO 9000:2000 Quality Management System Standard.

Note: ISO 9000:2000 documents like the Quality Manual are located in the Quality Management System (QMS) Zone.

Chapter 02

List of Military documents useful in Industrial Product Design.

Chapter 03

List of Department of Energy Standards and Handbooks interesting the product development industry.

Chapter 04

List of technical documents dedicated to product design and engineering. These documents are not standards.

Chapter 05

List of patents collected during different projects initiation. Patents are a key data in a feasability decision.

Chapter 06

Character fonts is a catalogue of referenced fonts. These fonts have been selected and⁄or ur used in projects. This knowledge base is a typical example of capitalization.

Chapter 07

Third party catalogues - Component choice is the most important time consuming activity in a design and engineering bureau. Give an optimized access to these items is a high value added activity.

Chapter 08

Technical Magazines

Chapter 09

Knowledge Management Framework. The CEN has published an extremely important document about KM. This document is a world class reference and is available for free.
